About Me

Picture

Owner / Operator / Delivery Driver / Chocolate Maker

Jennifer Reichhart

I started Miss Kitty's Chocolates because traditional jobs weren't working for me. I wanted to work for myself while making people happy. So chocolate it is!

Make no mistake, these are for you to enjoy ... as people. These are not treats for your cat. They're just shaped like cats for fun.

I love coming up with fun flavor combinations! Things that make you go, "Wait ... what?" Like BBQ chips and dark chocolate, dill pickle, tropical fruit flavors, bacon, and more. The weirder the better! You only live once, so let your taste buds boost your happiness meter.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard then everyone would do it. The hard ... is what makes it great.”

- Jimmy Dugan, Tom Hanks from A League of Their Own

How Did This Get Started?

It started with a thought, as most things do. I thought, "Mmm ... nut clusters sound good. I think I'll make some." So, I melted some Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips, mixed in some almonds, and put them in peanut butter cup molds I'd purchased to make a Secret Santa gift years back. As I was making the clusters, I had another thought. A lightbulb moment even. "I could do this. I could start a chocolate business!" My wheels began to spin rapidly! What kind of chocolate was I going to sell? What flavors would I use? What mix-ins? So many questions to answer! I must make a list to organize my brain.

It took me a while to come up with the name and logo. My first idea was "Adventure's Chocolates" after one of my cats. I wanted to use him as the logo (he's the cat with me in my profile picture). I took a picture of him and made it look like he was eating chocolate raining down from the sky, added his name in some neat font, and put in a textured background. It was simple, but I was really proud of how it looked (I deleted it when I was purging files for space, so you can't see it, sorry)! When I showed it to friends and family asking, "If you saw this logo, what would you think they're selling?" Everyone said the same thing. Cat food. That's when I realized, that food that has an animal mascot and is meant for human consumption, isn't using a "real" animal; it's a cartoon! I wasn't going to be able to use Adventure as my mascot. I had to come up with another name and work forward again. After much trial and error, I landed on the logo and name I have now.

Why Start A Business? Isn't It Hard?

Yes. Starting a business is hard. It's a lot of work, learning, failing, learning some more, failing some more. Having ideas that are great and work out. Then having what you think are good ideas but don't pan out nicely. It's a legit rollercoaster with all the loop-de-loops you can imagine.

My reasoning for starting this business wasn't because I had an idea I thought would work. I had been looking for ideas and ways to make money / start a business for a while. But until the chocolates, I hadn't come up with anything I thought would make money, let alone turn into something sustainable.

I have undiagnosed ADHD (well, not entirely. I was told by a doctor that, based on what he knew of me, I had ADHD, but we sadly didn't get that far). Regardless, I am, without a doubt, neurodivergent. From research I've done, I also have some aspects of autism, dyslexia, anxiety, and depression. I'm like a Heinz 57 of brains. There's a little sprinkling of everything in there, haha! Therefore, traditional jobs haven't always worked out well for me. I've been in the cooperate world since I was 17 and in family businesses since I was around 12ish. Lots of bosses, coworkers, processes, and procedures; you name it, I've likely experienced it. Now, in my late 30s (jeez-us that's insane to write! haha!) cooperate jobs are harder for me. I can't take the things I used to. I had a job at 36 where a manager thought it was okay to scream at people regularly. That's not okay. That's not something I can "tolerate" anymore. I needed something that worked for me, and finding it from another company wasn't happening anytime soon.

Alas, you have Miss Kitty's Chocolates! Something that is run by me, with me, and for ... you! I do taste the chocolate recipes before making batches to sell. But I make them for you, the customer. To bring joy, happiness, and a little reprieve from this insane world! And, not to brag, my customer service is top-notch if I do say so myself.

Is It Everything You Hoped It Would Be? Is It Worth It?

I'm in the beginning stages. The VERY early stages. But I'm working hard. I'm coming up with new ideas for promos, ways to get my name out there, and bring chocolate to the people. I'm thinking up new and fun recipes and flavor combinations to make taste buds dance and make you go, "Mmmm!" effort.

I know I have a long way to go. But I have an amazing support system in my husband, family, and friends. People who believe in me, my hard work, tenacity, muchness, and overall stubbornness to make it work no matter what.

It's worth it. I'm growing something from a seed into ... I don't know what it's going to look like. But it's going to be something great. Getting there is going to take a lot of time, patience, learning, and work. But I'll get there. With you, the customer's help, support, and love, I will get there. And I Thank you
